The 5th Annual Nun Run, a police-escorted motorcycle ride from Houston to Galveston held October 17, 2009, had more than 325 ride participants, a 50 percent increase from 2008! On a beautiful sunny Saturday morning, more than $70,000 was raised which will benefit the children and families seen at the CHRISTUS Southwest Community Health Center. Bikers were treated to a breakfast at Villa de Matel, the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in Houston, and then enjoyed the live band sounds of Easy Monday. Gallery Furniture owner Jim McIngvale, better known as Mattress Mack, was the master of ceremonies. After some teasing by three of the Sisters, Mattress Mack raced a decorated kick scooter against Sister Rosanne Popp, medical director of the health center. The competition raised an additional $1,200, which Mattress Mack matched. After a blessing by Father Richard, the bikers rode to Fisherman’s Wharf in Galveston where they were treated to a delicious seafood lunch. Awards and lots of prize drawings were then given. The Blue Knights were named as the recipients of the 2009 Vince Award for their on-going support of this special event.
