St. Bakhita is the patron Saint of our Centre. She was born in the Sudan around the year 1869. As a child, she experienced the anguish of being kidnapped and held in slavery. All this, however, did not diminish her trust in God, but increased it immeasurably. After obtaining her freedom in 1890, she was baptized and received the Sacraments of Initiation of the Catholic Church. She entered the Canossians Daughters of Charity religious order in 1893. St. Bakhita was known for her gentle voice, smile and hospitality.
She died on February 8, 1947, and was canonized as the first African Saint on October 1, 2000, by Pope John Paul II. St. Bakhita, Pray for Us.
